Day Camps for Youth
July 12-16, 2010; Ages: 7-12. EARTH
An extra supply fee of $10.00 per child for the week or $5.00 for a day for this course.
We need 10 registered participants for the week in order to run Nature Play Programs.

July 12-16 - This week's theme is "EARTH", and we shall be getting dirty, crawling, playing and creating art outdoors. We go out no matter what the weather gifts us with, so please bring extra clothing, a swim suit and towel, socks, rain clothing...be prepared for anything. Bring snacks, water (1 liter minimum) and food for the day unless notified otherwise.
Every day shall commence with a gathering circle, and salutation to the sun. A story with a theme for the day, may be told. A Clan Flag shall be made and hung on the first day of each camp...under this flag we gather sharing food and story.
Rain or shine, our day would include being in the forest, gathering plants or found objects to be used later in other projects. We will also be playing trust and observation games in the woods strengthening our senses. Remember please bring extra clothing and towels!
We will experience songs, drums, cooperative games or collective art experiences when we return to the school.
Snack time and Spontaneous Play
Raku Pottery, weaving, making leather pouches, small birch bark canoes, rattles, talking sticks rain sticks and other nature base crafts will be explored.
Food Preparation including Sun Teas, salads, summer gateau, raw food treats..mmmm! Lunch time and Play, picnic style outdoors if possible.
Nature journals..we shall make the covers with homemade paper which should be ready for binding the next day.
Theatre Sports and Traditional games in the afternoon and weather permitting, sprinkler and water play!
On the last day we shall participate in a potluck picnic!

Folklore Magic, A Whimsical Adventure into the Realm of Fairies

Fairy Week will explore the magical tales of Nova Scotia fairy lore as well as stories from across Canada through story time, dance, movement.
We will play with handmade wings, face painting, outdoor games, collective art experiences, and other things like fantastical jewelry and costumes. The last day we will have a Whimsical Fairy Picnic where we would feast on homemade creations and play out doors. YuM!

We will develop and explore a Creation Myth of our own
and imbue our tale with a rich variety of theatrical and musical elements
as our ancestors did. Every day will still commence with a circle and
salutation to the sun. Lots of cooperative games and trust exercises
will be played. We shall also be making a camp fired pottery piece which
is related to the story we have created. We will make nourishing herbal
teas, salads and a couple delicious treats to share. On the final day,
we will offer our stories to the group as workshoped pieces ..pieces
in process ONLY . (This is strictly a process oriented class).
Remember that we go out in ALL weather conditions, for walks and play in the rain and sunshine ...please dress appropriately and bring water (min. 1 litre ) snacks and lunch.

Instructor Bio - Skye
Guided by the Muses of Art and the Divas of Nature, Skye
wishes
to co-create a safe nurturing yet challenging environment with the
children. Utilizing outdoor exploration and activities, storytelling,
theatre and cooperative games, meaning-full art projects, food
preparation, poetry and PLAY. We co-create, guided by the weeks'
theme...weaving memories through lots of play, laughter and FUN!
Skye River Hawk holds a degree in Theatre and English Literature
from Simon Fraser University in BC, and completed her Post Graduate
Studies in Adventure and Eco Tourism at Confederation College in
Thunder Bay ON.
She has been a performer, worked back stage, and
taught at Magnus
Theatre in Thunder Bay ON as a personal voice and acting coach.
She has coordinated and implemented various children's programming
for summer camps on Denman Island BC, in Nelson BC and for the
Thunder Bay Fringe Festival in ON.
She has written and performed for several short one woman performance
pieces as well as acted with the Vancouver Film and Theatre
School and the Confederation College Film Dept.
Skye has been profoundly interested in outdoor theatrical productions
as it fuses together in a natural relationship both art and the natural
elements. As a child of the Barrenlands of the NWT, Skye feels a deep
connection to the elements of nature and it is this love and sense of
belonging she wishes to share and cultivate with the children. To
co-create a space for children to feel fully at peace within their
natural surroundings and perform naturally is a focus of this summer
program. Skye is the Artistic Director of Nature Play Theatre
Company.
